This position provides coordination of services and communication needs for YNHH patients who are deaf and hard of hearing. The coordinator is responsible for positive customer service interactions with all constituents and advocates for the communication needs of patients and families who are deaf and hard of hearing. The coordinator will possess expertise in social, psychological, medical, economic, cultural, and legal factors affecting individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing. The person will develop, implement and coordinate comprehensive communication services to meet the needs of YNHH patients. The coordinator will provide neutral, accurate interpretations in American Sign Language in a medical setting with considerable knowledge of medical terminology and adhere to sound principles and ethics of patient representation and medial interpretations. Addresses patient concerns directly in keeping with patient relations standards and protocol, and proposes opportunities for improvement. Responsibilities include serving as a resource to hospital staff in the area of services to patients & families who are deaf or hard of hearing. coordinates innovative initiatives to facilitate communication. This position serves as a medical interpreter for patients (and families) who are deaf or hard of hearing, and serves as a patient representative for patients (and families) who are deaf or hard of hearing. This person also participates in on-going professional development. Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred in the field of education, social work, public health, interpreting or other related fields. Certificate of Transliteration (CT) or a Certificate of Interpretation (CI) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or a Level 4 Certificate from the National Association of the Deaf. At least five(5) years' experience working with the deaf and hard of hearing community utilizing American Sign Language and at least three (3) years' experience working as an interpreter with significant exposure in a medical setting. Must be registered with the CT State Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Sound judgment and problem solving skills. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Demonstrates cultural competencies with sensitivity and awareness. Incumbent is held accountable for the accuracy, timeliness, and quality of own work. Exercises sound judgment in determining the needs of ASL/Transliteration patients and the accuracy and integrity of the interpretation. Assists staff in understanding the needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and in utilizing the audio equipment. Some evenings and weekends involved. Salary commensurate with experience. |
